The 2012 Olympics
I was heading back home through central London in the Tube when I heard an
Underground employee come over the loud speaker to announce that London had
won the bid for the 2012 Olympics, which prompted everyone to cheer.
At this stage it occurred to me that there would likely be some celebratory
tom-foolery occurring down at Trafalgar Square. So I made an about-face and
jumped onto another train towards Charring Cross station. When I got above
ground, I was met by throngs of cheering people and two inch pieces of confetti
floating about. Once I managed to shoulder my way into the middle of Trafalgar
Square, Tony Blair came up on one of the big screens and said "Congratulations"
to the crowd.
I saw some British singer named Melony C, who is apparently pretty big around
these parts. It was pretty exciting stuff, everyone was very happy, and also
a fair bit suprised I think. I had been reading about what the city will be
doing to to make the Olympics happen. They will be extending tube lines,
continuing fast train lines into Stratford station, revitalizing the east end
with parks and building olympic stadiums.
If you're seeing Trafalgar Square on the news, I'm at the base of the stairs
about 5 minutes after the vote was announced.
Here is a picture of the crowd in front of the stage and screens they setup,
in Trafalgar Square, backed by the lions surrounding Nelson's Monument.
